Leeds Press Gang
DON'T BELIEVE THE TYPE
Can you write a good story? Do you want to work in journalism? Are you a refugee with a story to tell?
We are a group of volunteers and refugee organisations in Leeds who want to make a real difference and help asylum seekers and refugees get their voices heard. We work with people with incredible experiences both in their country of origin and here in the UK. We know that people who hear their stories are often changed by what they hear. We also know that most people have very confused or ill-informed opinions of what seeking asylum really means.
Can you spare a few hours each month?
What's involved:
Gathering stories by interviewing refugees and attending events;
Writing press releases and feature articles;
Making links with the media locally and regionally;
Empowering asylum seekers and refugees to talk with the media;
Attending monthly meetings which are usually on the evening of the 4th Thursday in the month, in order to plan our press strategy.
It's important you build up a relationship with us, with the asylum seekers and refugees, and with the media - therefore we are looking for people who are going to stick with us for at least six months.
